Cookout at the Roy's Place - Moultonborough, NH   -   Saturday, September 9th

A great time was had by all!  The trip there was perfect for those of us (me) with a car that won't hit more than 50mph, so I've always loved the drive to Moultonborough.  Route 28 is a beautiful roadway with plenty of great scenery to soak in.  We stopped for breakfast in Epsom, and spent some time at an old fashioned general store near Moultonborough before we got to the cookout.  I'd forgotten to check my radiator fluid before I left the house, so wouldn't you know, the car let me know.

One interesting event on our drive up, happened about 1/2 way up to Moultonborough when I noticed that my temperature gauge was pinned hard to the right side of the gauge, well past the high mark at 212 degrees.  The engine was running perfectly fine, showing no signs of steaming or power-loss, but it seemed like it was worth checking out.  Just to be safe, we stopped to add water to the radiator, and to my surprise, the car swallowed every drop of water I had with me (2 gallons) and it still wasn't full.  Within about two minutes, the temp gauge showed 180 degrees and as we got back onto the road it fell even further to about 155.  Next time I'll check the water before I leave the house.

Later, I was fascinated to learn that in the "olden" days when everyone drove cars like mine, that rest stops and gas stations use to have large barrels of water sitting out for people to replenish their radiators.  It's not like today's pressurized systems where you lose coolant only when you boil over or when you've got a leak, in those days it really was necessary to top-off your radiator on a regular basis; it just the way things were.

When we arrived, Bob and Wendy had put together quite a spread.  There was plenty of food for all and a great view of the lake.  One of my favorite parts of the day was sitting on Bob's back porch watching a Thunder and Lighting storm that blew in unexpectedly, and then left nearly as fast as it arrived.

On our drive home, the thunderstorm came out for another show and followed us all the way out of the lakes region.  It's a funny thing driving a 72 year old car in a rain storm; 1934 was long before the invention of the defroster, and for those of you who've ever driven a car with vacuum wipers, you know what it's like driving up long hills in the pouring rain........ it's a fight between power and vacuum.  You need to keep on the gas to make it up the hill, but you need to let off the gas to get the wipers to move.  Funny stuff.

New Durham Lions Club - New Durham, NH    August 19th, 2006

Nice Show!  But I think the best part is the drive.  It's secondary roads all the way up, and there's no traffic.  This year they had right around 200 cars, with everything from 1920's an 30's, all the way through the 70's.  The restaurant next door is a perfect place for lunch, and I'm sure they do quite well on show day.

NECC Tech Session -  Pelham, NH    April 22nd, 2006

Another NECC Tech Session took place at the Roy's place on April 22nd, and what a time!  This time we chose something messy; an intake manifold gasket replacement.  The part itself couldn't cost more than $10, but the job is anything but cheap.  The whole top of Mark Germana's 390 was taken off to fix an oil leak at the back of the motor.  What a mess!!!  Bob and Mark spent hours with parts cleaners scrubbing 40 years of grease and sludge (yes, I've got pictures, but it's late and I can't post them right now).  Dennis did a great job showing everyone the mechanics of car repairs, and we all appreciate it!

Cavaleiros - Lowell, MA    March 11th, 2006

Once again, Pauline Vieira organized an official NECC dinner outing.  This time we ended up at Cavaleiros Authentic Portuguese Restaurant in Lowell, MA.  They were ready for us when we arrived, with a huge table for nearly thirty diners.  The food was fantastic.  This is definitely a place to recommend.

NH Tech Institute  -  Concord, NH  -  September 10th

Great Show!  The day started out extra windy, but calmed down by 10am or so.  Sun was with us all day, and the wind kept any of us from getting too hot.
